AI video analytics for Access Control

AI video analytics for access control combines people, vehicle and licence plate detection with existing access and security systems. It detects tailgating, wrong-way movement, missing PPE, unusual face coverings and defined objects, then presents relevant events for review.

Direct answer

What does access control achieve with AI video analytics?

AI video analytics supplements existing access systems with visible context. It recognises, for example, whether several people follow a single access process, vehicles have a known licence plate or the prescribed PPE is worn in certain work areas. For applications with biometric verification, Vaidio can also use facial recognition and compare detected faces with controlled reference lists.

Access control: what does video analytics recognise?

Depending on the access area, several analysis functions can be combined. The video analytics supplements the authorisation decision of the leading access system with visible information.

Abstract visualization: object and tailingshot detection.

Object and Tailgating Recognition

Several people pass controlled access, although only a single access event is expected. This allows doors, security gates and sensitive access rights to unwanted walking aside.

Abstract visualization: licence plate recognition.

Licence plate recognition

Vehicle codes are automatically read and connected to the camera, time and access. Controlled lists can provide known or defined vehicles for review.

Abstract visualization: wrong-way detection.

Wrong-way detection

People or vehicles are recognised when they pass defined access contrary to the intended direction – for example at pure exits, locks or controlled driving routes.

Face Recognition

Vaidio can compare appropriate face images with controlled references. People without a suitable reference entry are not automatically identified.

In industrial, laboratory or safety areas, the analysis can check whether defined visible protective equipment such as a helmet or safety vest is worn.

Access control: Connecting cameras and response paths.

The AI does not decide independently on any access authorisation. It supplements existing systems with visual information and combines them with clearly defined rules.

Typical operational situations

Add access where visible context counts.

The solution is suitable wherever classic authorisation information is to be supplemented with visible security or process features.

Corporate and Campus Environments

Monitor pedestrian entrances, security gates and sensitive building areas for tailgating, wrong-way movement and defined deviations.

Industry, Logistics and Plants

Connect access with PPE rules, vehicle recognition, licence plates, appointment or delivery information and defined security zones.

Data centres, KRITIS and authorities

Integrate additional visual checks into existing access processes and supplement Vaidio face recognition with appropriate conditions.

Technological implementation

Implement access processes to suit the architecture.

SynaEYE and Vaidio are used for continuous visual monitoring of access. The platform selection depends on the required analysis functions, infrastructure and integration scope.

Responsibility and limits

Access authorisation needs visible context and a leading system.

AI video analytics provides visible information about an access event. It does not automatically replace the leading authorisation or access control system.

Visibility and camera positionocclusion, unfavourable viewing angles, poor lighting, small objects or dense groups of people can influence the recognition. Cameras must be positioned appropriately for the respective access process.
Access event and number of peoplePeople, groups or special operational processes can make it difficult to assign the assignment between the number of people and the number of people and must be validated in a real way.
Permission remains in the leading systemThe video analytics detects people, licence plates and zone violations. The connected access, authorisation or process system determines whether someone is actually authorised.
Detection is not identificationPeople or object detection does not automatically establish identity. Biometric identification is performed only through Vaidio face recognition and controlled reference lists designed for that purpose.
Check biometrics separatelyFace recognition requires a separate assessment of purpose, legal basis, proportionality, access rights and storage duration. The legal basis for any watchlist must also be assessed for the specific use case.
Privacy by Design

Not every access process requires the identification of a person. Many applications can be implemented with licence plates, object classes, zones, direction of movement or visible PPE features.

  • No face recognition as a standard component of any access solution
  • Face recognition within the Synaedge portfolio exclusively via Vaidio and controlled reference lists
  • People without reference entry remain unknown
  • Limit whitelists to required permissions; use blacklists only with clearly defined purpose and appropriate legal basis
  • Limiting camera areas to necessary access zones as well as roles and access rights
  • Log relevant access rights and events and define retention and retention periods
  • Provide for human review for safety-critical consequences

Assess data protection requirements for your specific use case. For EU locations, refer to the GDPR and the EDPB guidelines on video surveillance. Also consider the requirements of the EU AI Act, where applicable to your use case.

Frequently asked questions

Access Control explained in brief.

What does AI video analytics recognise by access?

People, vehicles, licence plates, direction of movement, tailgating, talgating, visible PPE, masking and defined objects can be recorded. The specific process determines the required functions.

Does the solution work with existing cameras?

In many cases yes. First, perspective, resolution, light, frame rate, access zone and visible feature size are checked with real images.

Which platforms are suitable for access control?

SynaEYE supports defined person, vehicle, PPE and directional rules; Vaidio complements Enterprise functions and optional face recognition. The selection therefore depends on purpose and integration.

Can Vaidio identify faces for access control?

Yes, using approved reference images and suitable camera footage. Biometrics nevertheless requires a separate assessment of purpose, legal basis, access, logging and retention periods.

Can the AI detect PPE, masks and objects?

Yes, if the features are visible and unambiguously defined. After that, each function is validated with real positive, negative and edge cases.

How is the detection quality validated?

A pilot uses real positive, negative and edge cases. This means that detections, false alerts, response time and suitability for the intended process are measurable.

What are the limits to consider?

Occlusions, backlighting, dense groups and changing routes can affect detection. Exceptions and human review therefore remain part of critical processes.

How will data protection be taken into account?

Purpose, camera zones, roles, access rights and storage duration are defined in advance. Face recognition is not a standard component and is assessed separately.
