Direct answer

What is drone detection?

AI-powered drone detection analyses video streams for visible features of unmanned flying objects. If the system detects a possible drone within a monitored area, it generates an event with a camera, time and visual evidence. This allows security teams to check drone sightings at an early stage and respond in line with defined security processes.

Short definition

Scope of detection

Drone Detection: capabilities and results.

The visual drone detection evaluates form, movement and other visible features of a flying object. Object size, distance, camera perspective and image quality are decisive.

Symbolic representation: A clearly visible drone with four rotors is marked in the camera image.

01 / 04

Visible drones

The analysis detects drones if they are sufficiently large, sharp and clearly distinguishable from the background in the camera image. Depending on the model, typical shapes, rotor arrangement and other visible features can be incorporated into the evaluation.

Symbolic representation: The detection frame locates a drone within a delimited camera image.

02 / 04

Position in the camera image

A possible hit is located in the image. This allows you to see in which part of the monitored airspace or system area the drone was visible.

Symbolic representation: A drone is tracked along its visible trajectory in the camera image; pale contours show previous positions.

03 / 04

Movement in the visual area

As long as the object remains visible, the analysis can track its movement within the camera image and document the course of the viewing with time and image context.

Symbolic representation: A drone appears in a marked image area; a clock symbol illustrates the active time slot.

04 / 04

Zone and time rules

Detections can be limited to defined image areas, sensitive zones, or specific time windows. In this way, relevant sightings can be prioritised in a more targeted manner.

Typical applications

Where is drone detection used?

Drone detection with AI video analytics is particularly suitable for areas where unmanned flying objects can pose a security, espionage or operational risk.

Critical infrastructure and energy facilities

Power plants, energy facilities, communication infrastructure or other critical locations can be monitored for visible drones within defined areas.

Authorities and protected areas

On particularly protected authorities and security sites, visual drone detection can form an additional source of information for airspace and perimeter surveillance.

Industrial and development sites

Production facilities, research sites and development areas can record unwanted drone sightings early and hand them over to existing safety processes.

Airports and sensitive airspaces

In appropriate monitored areas, visual analysis can detect suspicious drone sightings early on. Aviation law and operational processes remain leading the way.

Patching and shielded locations

For prisons and shielded facilities, the analysis may prioritise visible drones as a possible indication of unauthorised deliveries, observation, or security breaches.

Major events and temporary protections

For events and temporary protected areas, suitable cameras can monitor defined airspace areas and report relevant sightings to the operational organisation.

Responsibility and feasibility

Drone Detection: limitations and requirements.

Visual drone detection is based entirely on the camera image. Distance, object size, optics, weather, lighting, motionlessness and background significantly influence the detection quality. We check the actual capture range and relevant scenarios before production deployment with real recordings.

Visibility, Distance and Optics

As the distance increases, a drone in the image becomes smaller. The focal length, resolution, viewing angle and frame rate must therefore match the desired detection zone.

Coverage and environmental conditions

Buildings, vegetation, fog, rain, snow, backlight and darkness can partially or completely cover a drone and make it difficult to identify.

Visually similar flying objects

Birds, planes, helicopters, balloons, or other small objects can appear similar from a great distance. Hits must therefore be verified in the image context.

Limited camera viewing area

A fixed camera only monitors its visible area. For larger areas, several cameras, suitable optics or supplementary sensors may be required.

No pilot or intention recognition

The image analysis does not recognise the pilot or reliable manufacturer, owner, radio connection or intention of a drone. It provides a visual event for review.

No full counter-UAS sensors

AI video analytics is not a complete counter-UAS sensor. Radar, RF or radio detection, remote ID receivers or other specialised sensors can complement the visual detection.

Assess data protection requirements for your specific use case. For EU locations, refer to the GDPR and the EDPB guidelines on video surveillance. Also consider the requirements of the EU AI Act, where applicable to your use case.

Frequently asked questions

Drone Detection explained in brief.

What does drone detection detect?

Configurable inspection features are: visible drones, position in the camera image, movement in the field of view, zone and time rules. We validate which of these work reliably using real scenes.

Where is drone detection used?

Typical applications include critical infrastructure and energy facilities, authorities and protected areas, industrial and development sites, airports and sensitive airspaces, legal trains and shielded locations, major events and temporary protection areas. A defined follow-up process is decisive.

Which platform supports drone detection?

Suitable platforms include Vaidio. The final choice depends on the operating model, infrastructure, integrations and data retention.

What are the limitations of drone detection?

With increasing distance, a drone in the image becomes smaller. The focal length, resolution, viewing angle and frame rate must therefore fit the desired detection zone. Buildings, vegetation, fog, rain, snow, backlight and darkness can partially or completely cover a drone and make it difficult to identify. Birds, airplanes, helicopters, balloons or other small objects can appear similar from a large distance. Hits must therefore be verified in the image context. A fixed camera only monitors its visible area. For larger areas, several cameras, suitable optics or supplementary sensors may be required. The image analysis does not recognise the pilot or reliable manufacturer, owner, radio connection or intention of a drone. It provides a visual event for review. AI video analytics is not a complete counter-UAS sensor. Radar, RF or radio detection, remote ID receivers or other specialised sensors can complement the visual detection.

Does the analytics work with existing cameras?

In many cases, yes. The decisive factors are perspective, resolution, lighting, frame rate, compression and the visible size of the relevant feature.
