Retail AI video analytics: What does visual AI do for you?

With visual AI, you automatically evaluate the images of your existing cameras for security, store operation and area control. You can detect clearly defined objects, movements, numbers of people and visible events and provide the results for your defined operational processes.

SynaHUB can also automate recurring visual inspections. Instead of checking entrances, warehouse doors, escape routes or access routes manually, a camera captures and documents the visible condition. If it detects a deviation, you receive a targeted alert.

You evaluate visible processes with the systems. The technology does not generally assess the intention of a person and classifies no one as a thief alone due to a move.

Security

Detect visible weapons, physical conflicts, falls and defined threats.

Store operation

Central applications in retail

Use AI video analytics for security, customer flows and parking processes.

With four central applications, you can connect your existing cameras with specific safety, operating and analysis processes. Which applications make sense for you depend on your type of store, your area and your organisational goal.

SynaHUB · visual inspection tasks

Check branch states without running any control point manually.

Today, you check many store states at fixed times, before opening, after closing in or manually during a shift. With SynaHUB, you can automate such recurring visual inspections and receive documented results.

Job-based visual AI

From the current image to your structured answer.

You determine when a camera is created by creating a current image and which question should be answered. A Vision Language Model evaluates the visible state based on your specifications. The documented result will then hand you over to your intended process.

Supplementary application areas

Comprehensively support people, buildings and your store operation.

Depending on the location, you can provide occupational safety, fire protection, access control and forensics to your central retail applications.

Platforms and deployment

Choose the right platform for your task.

Depending on your task, you will receive your own Synaedge platform, established enterprise technology or a combined architecture.

Operational video analytics

Continuous AI video analytics for live camera streams

SynaEYE continuously analyses existing cameras in real time and combines detection, event logic, alerts, tracking and forensics in a European edge AI platform.

The right choice if you:
want to monitor security, safety or operational processes continuously with your cameras and process detected events immediately.

Job-based visual AI

Visual AI for freely defined inspection tasks

SynaHUB turns a visual question into an automated AI job. A camera, API or schedule supplies the image, a VLM evaluates the situation and returns a structured result.

The right choice if you:
want to inspect conditions, references, quality or individual visual questions without developing a separate analytics module for every task.

Responsibility and limits

Plan your visual analysis with clearly visible criteria.

With visual AI, you can only evaluate states and events that are visible in appropriate quality. Consider therefore that camera position, lighting, coverings, crowd density and environmental conditions significantly determine which analysis is reliably possible for you.

Intention lineA camera image shows visible actions but cannot reliably establish intent or legal meaning. It should therefore not be expected to detect shoplifting automatically in general.
Image boundaryMake sure that hidden objects, unfavourable perspectives, poor lighting or very small image details cannot be reliably evaluated.
Context boundarySupplement opening hours, permissions and other branch information if you want to evaluate whether access is permitted, an area released or a state can be expected.
Process limitTest your detection rules, thresholds and response paths with real scenes. If necessary, plan an additional human verification on critical alarms.
System boundaryUse visual AI to complement your store operations, occupational safety and existing safety systems. It does not replace your technical evaluation of an incident or prescribed safety measures.
Privacy by DesignPlan your solution for a defined purpose and in line with data minimisation. Define roles, access rights, retention periods, logging and masking for the location and applicable requirements.

For locations in the EU form the GDPR, especially Art. 5, 6, 25 and 35 and the EDSA video surveillance guidelines the basis of the privacy audit. In addition, consider the law of the respective Member State, in particular employee data protection and co-determination. The duties from the EU AI Act check for the concrete use of AI.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions about AI video analytics in retail are answered in a compact way.

Can you use your existing cameras?

In many cases yes. Check resolution, perspective, frame rate, lighting, network access and your specific analysis task. We test your existing cameras with real scenes before we make a reliable statement.

Can you automatically detect shoplifting with AI?

We cannot promise you general direct shoplifting detection. The intention of a person cannot be reliably derived from a camera view. However, you can detect clearly defined visible events, such as the removal of a particular object from a monitored zone, unauthorised intrusion, visible weapons or physical violence.

Can you evaluate people flows anonymously?

Yes. You can evaluate personal counting, directions of motion, queues and area usage without identifying individuals.

Do you need facial recognition?

No. For the standard applications described, you do not need facial recognition. If you want to use identifying procedures in publicly accessible sales areas, you must check their legal admissibility separately.

What is the difference between real-time analysis and planned visual control for you?

With SynaEYE or Vaidio, you can continuously detect events during the running camera stream. With SynaHUB, you can specifically evaluate individual images at set times or after defined events.

How do you get detected events?

Depending on the scenario, we hand over the results to your store managers, your security staff, your existing control centre, your VMS or your own applications. For critical safety events, you define the testing and escalation path in advance.

How do you consider data protection?

Plan the solution for a defined purpose and in line with data minimisation. Define roles, access rights, retention periods, logging and masking for the location and applicable requirements.

Can you manage multiple branches centrally?

Yes. Depending on your number of cameras, network structure, latency and privacy requirements, you operate processing on edge systems, on-premises, in a cloud, or as a hybrid architecture, and manage your sites together.

How do you start a pilot project?

First, define a specific event or visual inspection, suitable camera scenes and the desired reaction path. We then validate the analysis with your real recordings and integrate it into your store operation in a controlled manner.

What task should your cameras be performed in your branch?

Together, we test your camera scenes, image quality, platform role, necessary integrations and measurable success criteria based on your real store processes.
