What connects Vaidio to NVIDIA Cosmos and Jetson Thor?
Vaidio combines classic object detection with targeted VLM testing at the edge. A specialised model first detects a relevant event. Only the appropriate image section is then evaluated in context by NVIDIA Cosmos 3 Edge on NVIDIA Jetson Thor. Visual reasoning should also be usable where space, performance, cooling or network connection are limited.

Why visual reasoning becomes relevant at the edge
AI video analytics now detects people, vehicles, smoke, fire, protective clothing or other visible features in live video streams. This quick detection is sufficient for many applications. It becomes more demanding when a system not only has to determine that something is visible, but also, How the situation has to be classified.
Smoke can indicate a fire, but can also be caused by steam, dust or a normal production process. A person with an item may be carrying a tool, a package, or a security-related object. In such situations, a second, contextual check can help before an alarm is passed on to a control centre or an operational process.
Previously, this type of vision-language-model reasoning often required server-level infrastructure or a cloud connection. However, in remote industrial facilities, in mobile systems or on robots, there is not always enough space, energy, cooling and stable connectivity available. This is exactly where the edge workflow described by Vaidio comes into play.
First recognise, then classify
The architecture works in two stages. In the first step, Vaidio monitors the video stream using specialised computer vision models. These models are optimised for continuous detection, searching for predefined objects, states or events.
The second stage is only activated when there is a suitable hit. Instead of processing every single image from each camera through a large vision language model, Vaidio only passes the relevant image or a selected section to NVIDIA Cosmos 3 Edge. The VLM assesses the context and supports the decision whether to dismiss, acknowledge or escalate the detected event.
This selective approach is crucial for edge operations: continuous pre-filtering remains resource efficient, while more computationally intensive reasoning is only used where additional context actually adds value.
The roles of Vaidio, Cosmos, Metropolis and Jetson Thor
The individual components fulfill different tasks within the workflow:
- Vaidio AI Vision Platform: monitors the camera streams, detects configured events and controls the downstream verification.
- NVIDIA Cosmos 3 Edge: supplements recognition with visual context understanding and reasoning.
- NVIDIA Metropolis: provides libraries and building blocks for accelerated video and vision AI workloads.
- NVIDIA Jetson Thor: forms the compact edge computing platform for recognition, reasoning and local decision support.
The combination does not replace technically defined alarm rules. It adds an additional level of evaluation. Which events are checked, which response is considered relevant and which process is subsequently triggered must still be determined and validated for the specific application.
Correctly classify early measurements from Vaidio
Vaidio publishes the first, not yet optimised measurements from the described workflow. For full 1920×1080 pixel images, approximately 790 to 890 milliseconds per image were observed, according to the manufacturer. A section with 640 × 480 pixels took around 140 milliseconds; at 336 × 336 pixels the values were approximately between 110 and 150 milliseconds.
In the evaluated setup, it also appeared possible to process more than ten cameras at one image per second. These numbers are not a general performance promise. They come from early testing and depend, among other things, on the model, prompt, image size, scene complexity, parallelization and system configuration.
Important: This information exclusively describes the additional VLM verification on the individual Jetson Thor system evaluated. It is not a limitation of the Vaidio platform. Vaidio can be operated in a distributed manner and, according to the manufacturer, scales from one camera to enterprise environments with tens of thousands of cameras.
Nevertheless, the measured values show why upstream detection makes sense: the smaller and more targeted the visual evidence, the less material the VLM has to process. This can reduce response time and use available edge computing power more efficiently.
Which applications can benefit
The approach is particularly suitable for event-based applications where additional context improves alert quality:
- Smoke and fire detection: Separate visible signs of steam, dust or regular processes.
- Perimeter and access: further evaluate a detected zone entry based on the visible situation.
- Occupational safety: Contextually assess missing PPE or a potentially dangerous situation.
- Transport and logistics: Classify unusual stops, blocked areas or conspicuous object positions.
- Mobile inspection and robotics: Evaluate visual cues locally without sending every decision to a data centre.
The greatest benefit comes not from a VLM alone, but from the combination of camera images, fast pre-filtering, targeted context checking and a clearly defined follow-up process.
What needs to be checked in a real edge project
Productive deployment requires more than selecting a model and edge hardware. Before implementation, camera perspective, image quality, event frequency, desired response time and available computing power should be considered together.
Equally important are data protection, roles, logging, offline behaviour and the question of which decision can be automated. For safety-critical applications, the system should not only be tested under ideal conditions. Counterexamples, weather, lighting, concealment and real operational processes belong in the validation.
The early Vaidio measurements also have to be translated on a project-specific basis. A system with few rare events has different requirements than a site where many cameras trigger VLM checks simultaneously.
Classification by Synaedge
For Synaedge, the approach is particularly interesting because it combines two previously often separate worlds: continuous, specialised video analytics and more flexible visual reasoning. Object detection remains the fast operational filter. The VLM is used as a controlled second instance, not as a permanent replacement for all analysis models.
This is a plausible way to bring more contextual decisions closer to the camera and location. Whether NVIDIA Jetson Thor and Cosmos 3 Edge are suitable for a specific environment still needs to be checked based on real scenes, load profiles and integrations. Synaedge is planning camera, compute, network and process architecture as a coherent system.
VLM reasoning at the edge
What does VLM reasoning mean at the edge?
A vision-language model evaluates visual information directly on an edge platform close to the point of use. This means that the additional context check does not necessarily have to take place in a central server or in the cloud.
Does Cosmos 3 Edge analyse every video frame?
Not in the workflow described by Vaidio. Vaidio first recognises a relevant event and then only transfers the appropriate image or an image section to the VLM.
What is the role of NVIDIA Jetson Thor?
Jetson Thor provides the accelerated edge computing platform that brings together detection, VLM reasoning, and local decision support.
Are the processing times mentioned guaranteed?
No. These are early, unoptimized manufacturer observations. Actual performance depends on input size, model, prompt, scene, load and system configuration.
Is Vaidio limited to around ten cameras by the Jetson Thor test?
No. The number only refers to the additional VLM verification in the edge test described. The Vaidio platform itself can be set up in a distributed manner and, according to the manufacturer, scales from single to tens of thousands of cameras.
Does the VLM replace human assessment?
Not generally. The VLM can form an additional verification level. Responsibilities, escalation rules and possible human review must be defined according to the risk.
